Aligning Human Resources Management: An excellent career option.
In and after pandemic era where we are witnessing the human element of people at its optimum level, we must admit that Human Resources Managementat professional scale will never be out of fashion. As more and more industries are evolving their way out of pandemic and multiple start-ups are in the incubation stage, the world will need more and more Human Resource leaders in the times ahead. The challenge lies in getting the initial break or a platform to carve a solid career in the world of Human Resources. When your true purpose of being in Human Resources is met with the wider objectives of a selected organisation, sky is the limit to harness the people potential of the company. While we understand that in the initial phase of our career journey more focus is on learning the skills then in identifying the real purpose of being with the human capital. However once we identify the sense of meaning of working with the people and for the people, the doors of opportunity keep arising. One of the USP of working with Human Resources is the wide variety of learning across each industries and sectors. A career in Human Resources always inspires the individual to learn and grow in the field especially when we see success stories in the form of people growing around us. A bigger belief for a true HR leader is – “When your people grow, you grow”. If we work with this sentiment, our acceptability as a leader and our growth as professional is assured in a structured organisation.
With a long term vision of becoming the Chief Human Resources Officer of a large organisation, a true HR professional can always work on the structured Personal Development Plan for self. A combination of organisation behaviour and knowledge of culture of the industry/geography acts a s a catalyst in the growth of career in HR. Organisations have also witnessed HR leaders handling the role of CEO or Chief Operating Officer with a bigger dream of making a difference through development of people. DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) is a buzz word in the global Human Resources phenomenon which is further making the role of HR more impactful from Corporate Social Responsibility perspective. With both emotional wellbeing and mental health as need of the hour, imagine the wide difference a strong HR leader can bring by designing strategies that touches the life of so many people.
Once we start our career in HR vertical – whether in a generalist role or in a specialist role (like Compensation & Rewards, Recruitment , Talent, Learning & Development etc ) , the aim should be to learn the maximum in the initial 2 to 3 years. This truly strengthens in learning the roots of the selected industry HR syllabus from the Standard Operating Procedures perspective. An HR professional has an option to cross train and grow within the same organisation or change industries after gaining certain years of experience in the initial phase. We have witnessed many successful stories of HR leaders growing within the same organisation, across countries and continents. There are also a similar stream of leaders in HR that have grown with the vast experience of several industries in their knowledge buckets. We often witnessed people with Operations experience in the selected industry, opting to grow in HR in the future and strengthen their place within the chosen industry.
Talent like water is unstoppable, and so are the success stories of true leaders in Human Resources. We find many Indian professionals currently heading the global HR operations of leading international brands including Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser, Standard Chartered etc. While functional and geographical mobility play a bigger role in the career growth for any professional, our People perspective also widens and enhances our knowledge and attitude dimensions. HR career options also allows you to meet talent from different walks of life, exploring career opportunities at different phases of their life. While digital and technological growth is at its rapid pace even in HR functions, the need for true People leader is always stronger than ever. The tenets of Empathy, Fairness and Transparency are playing a major role in the growth of any HR professional even in the challenging times.
Especially during pandemic, the HR leaders have stepped up the game by designing policies and procedures to strike a fine balance between productivity, effectiveness and overall wellbeing of their people who are contributing to the success of organisation by working from home. A career in Human Resources in any selected industry will be meaningful when we believe in our core purpose that – “Everything we do is to enable our people to live a life they can be proud of”. The joy of contributing towards the success of an organisation by writing success stories of our people is immensely gratifying. True Human Resource leaders are always remembered for writing historical strategies and strengthening people initiatives that remains in the golden pages of organisation history. Remember to be MAD (Making A Difference) in the lives of OUR PEOPLE.
