ear Students,
Welcome to the GNIOT Institute of Management Studies (GIMS)! As a corporate mentor, I am happy to welcome you as you embark on a journey of learning and career building. The dynamism of the corporate world is aptly defined as the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) world. In order to cope up with these challenges and navigate through the corporate maze, here are my recommendations which will help you to climb up the corporate ladder and make a great career.
Status Quo vs. Active experimentation – Going forward companies and their clients will ask for new solutions that best suit their business model and not just what is available off the shelf. Professionals of the future would need to develop a strong ability to challenge the status quo and come up with different ways of doing things to solve the problem / leverage an opportunity.
Employee to Intrapreneur – The employer-employee concept is slowly getting replaced with an Intrapreneurial mindset. Companies are looking to hire more and more professionals, who are willing to take ownership and demonstrate impact.
Build Your Personal Brand – Branding is not only important for companies but also for individuals. I would encourage all of you to start focusing on building your brand on professional platforms like LinkedIn by networking with professionals (agnostic of industry), sharing your point of view, and engaging in constructive conversations with industry professionals, faculty members, alumni, etc. GIMS brand will surely give you a head start in your career journey.
Asking for help is a sign of a successful professional – Over the next few years, you will have the privilege to use GIMS resources and ecosystem to navigate your way through different types of learning and gain experience. However, it is also important to realize the need for a mentor so that when you are in doubt, you can reach out without hesitation, seek guidance, and move on.
Nurture Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking Skills – Challenges that businesses are facing are becoming more complex. It is imperative that you start inculcating the Japanese school of thought wherein before implementing a solution, critically analyze the problem from different angles and develop an in-depth understanding. Thinking out of the box is being replaced with thinking without the box. While being at GIMS, it would be fruitful to participate in society events, college initiatives, case study competitions, internships, etc. This would allow you to apply conceptual knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Demonstrate Professional Behaviour and Ethical Standards – Honesty, treating people with respect, and upskilling yourself with changes in your field are non-negotiable elements for well-respected and sought-after professionals. Integrity and professionalism are the bedrock of a successful career. Always conduct yourself with the highest level of ethics and professionalism. Also, utilize GIMS resources and maintain a balanced lifestyle.
Each one of you may have your own aspirations and dreams as you move along this journey. However, while reaching the destination is important, it is equally important to cherish the overall journey. There will be ups and downs in your journey, but every situation that you face and overcome will make you a stronger, mature, and successful professional.
Wishing each one of you the very best for your journey at GIMS. I look forward to interacting with you, guiding you, and applauding every milestone that you achieve in this journey from hereon.
Best Regards,
